3/2/2023 0 Comments Lemmings jumping off cliffs![]() ![]() Of course, it’s one thing to shoot real animal behavior in a way that allows it to be captured on film, and an entirely different thing to make up fake behavior for dramatic effect. The Long History of Nature Documentary Fake-OutsĪs the CBC’s documentary showed, Disney’s lemming hoax is actually far from the first time that nature documentaries have been accused of staging scenes.īBC’s Blue Planet 2 purportedly shot most of their scenes in laboratories, while other documentaries have been accused of stuffing dead animals with M&Ms to attract packs of predators and creating fake wolf dens while using captive wolves to give the perception of wild behavior. (Source: Cruel Camera, Canadian Broadcasting Company, 1982). The body of water pictured in the scene isn’t the Arctic ocean, but the Bow River in downtown Calgary!.They didn’t have enough lemmings, so the same small handful of lemmings were thrown in the water again and again to create the illusion of a mass group suicide and,.Producers paid Inuit children in Manitoba a quarter per lemming to gather up the rodents. The documentary interviewed Walt Disney’s nephew and exposed some pretty embarrassing facts about the way that Disney staged that scene, including that: The relevant scenes from that documentary can be watched here from the 20:54 minute mark to 29:50: The entire charade was first exposed by a 1982 Canadian Broadcasting Company series called Cruel Camera, which aimed to show the world the unkind ways animals are treated off-screen for movies and documentaries. In fact, lemmings do nothing of the sort and the entire scene was faked by Disney!Īccording to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the producers staged the entire scene by importing lemmings to the area of Alberta where the documentary was filmed (where lemmings don’t live naturally, by the way) and then essentially forcing the lemmings over the cliff and into the water! The narrator claims the lemmings do this because they mistake the ocean for a lake and are just trying to make it to the other side. What’s interesting is that the producers felt the need to pretend like they were “clearing up a myth,” when in fact they were about to perpetrate their own little hoax on the audience!īecause what happens next is that the lemmings are seen purportedly jumping in a mass “frenzy” over giant cliffs and into the Arctic sea, where they swim out into the water and eventually drown en masse. And, as often happens in man’s nature lore, it’s a story both true and false as we shall see in a moment. The story is one of the persistent tales of the arctic. Here’s an actual living legend: for it’s said of this tiny animal that it commits mass suicide by rushing into the sea in droves. The scene starts off with the narrator relaying the lemming suicide myth to the audience, saying: Here’s the full scene in all its grainy vintage glory: Now Disney didn’t create the myth that lemmings jump off cliffs to commit mass suicide - there are references to the concept dating as far back as this 1918 National Geographic Magazine - but Disney is widely credited with popularizing the idea with its 1958 nature documentary White Wilderness. How Disney Faked Mass Lemming Suicide in a Nature Documentary These unusual fluctuations apparently create mass migration effects and may have something to do with the bizarre urban legend of mass lemming suicide, which was given a boost by none other than the Walt Disney Company. ![]() In fact, certain species of lemmings are known to experience significant population booms every few years before their numbers suddenly dwindle to close to nothing. Lemmings live underground during the harsh winters, but come above ground during the warmer months – when they can get busy with each other fast. I mean just look at this little guy: Oh my god, so cute! They look something like a gerbil or hamster.Īnd they are cute AF. The story is a bizarre one, as is its lasting cultural impact, so let’s dive right into this peculiar chapter in documentary history.Ī lemming is a small rodent native to the arctic tundra. I’m referring to that time in 1958 when the Walt Disney Company staged a mass lemming suicide in an Academy Award-nominated documentary film. It means, basically, “don’t just go where others are going.”īut did you know it’s a total fabrication resulting from a fake documentary? Ever heard the phrase “don’t be a lemming”? ![]()

3/2/2023 0 Comments Space age architecture![]() Oddly enough, Googie was used as a deragatory term almost from the start - born in Southern California and named for a West Hollywood coffee shop designed in 1949 by John Lautner, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Googie is an odd word a funny word a word that feels like it’s doing a few vowel-drenched laps around your tongue before finally flopping out of your mouth. We find Googie at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the Space Needle in Seattle, the mid-century design of Disneyland’s Tomorrowland, in Arthur Radebaugh‘s postwar illustrations, and in countless coffee shops and motels across the U.S. It draws inspiration from Space Age ideals and rocketship dreams. It’s a style built on exaggeration on dramatic angles on plastic and steel and neon and wide-eyed technological optimism. Googie is a modern (ultramodern, even) architectural style that helps us understand post-WWII American futurism - an era thought of as a “golden age” of futurist design for many here in the year 2012. I didn’t know the word, but I definitely knew the style. This is often nullified by the stretch move, which lets you reach up and down to other platforms that’d usually be out of your grasp – but only if there’s a podium directly underneath the one that you’re trying to grab onto. It would be impossible to play this game without the brightness set just right, and even then you’ll probably still stumble upon a problem or two. Exploring is made all the harder thanks to the odd layers in each stage that sometimes make you doubt what you can actually stand on. The design is such that you won’t often be able to dodge these sections, but that shouldn’t prove too much of a problem, as it’s the levels themselves that are against you. Platformer fans will tell you that there’s a natural feeling to the best entries in the genre, a ‘tightness’ that gives you control over your character, but that just doesn’t appear to be present here. ![]() It’s endlessly annoying to have to time a leap just right, and then to fall two or three levels downwards because you hit the jump button when you were too close to the edge of a ledge. The title’s most annoying moments will come from the disparity between what you want your putty to do and what he’ll actually do. You’ll occasionally be blocked by enemies that move both left and right (and sometimes even upwards), but for the most part there’s nothing too challenging outside of the act of actually exploring everything. The gameplay is simple: as a little blue blob of putty, you must collect all of the red splodges of goo and hurry to the green door that appears. It’s surprising, then, that this revamped PlayStation 4 version does little to stretch above and beyond its retro roots. Jump forward 15 years, and we no longer get excited by shapes (unless they’re naughty shapes and you’re a member of Reddit), or game logic. Back in the nineties, the eventually unreleased Amiga version of Putty Squad was praised by the press for its varied level shapes, consistent game logic, and “masterful” animation. ![]() 3/2/2023 0 Comments Northern lights bingo![]() ![]() Read how I adapted after losing both parents before I was 25 and being diagnosed with epilepsy.ĭon’t miss another Minnesota top 5 guide! It is from a God of unconditional and everlasting love. It remains even in the most strenuous moments, and has no barriers or limitations. Joy is a difficult thing. It is not, however, to be mistaken with happiness. These girls that I honestly didn’t know that well at all treated me like I was their favorite person in the world, and made what appeared to be the worst possible 24 hours, a day that was worth enjoying to its fullest. The cloud over my heart had completely vanished, and it was replaced with an incandescent joy.Īs dramatic as this all might sound, I mean every word of it. This is the worst day in all of history, and I’m standing here grinning like a two year old who was just given the deluxe Barbie Dream House. I stood there for a few seconds, slowly becoming aware of the uncontrollable stretch in my facial muscles and the opening in my lips which exposed my teeth. I was dumbfounded. How did this even make sense. They complimented my tan (always the best- tip to guys: tell a girl how tan she is and you’re set for a very long and fulfilling marriage), they said that it was great to see me, and pranced out the doors. Still in shock of the amount of joy overflowing in front of me, I was embraced by two girls from my old high school that were just way too happy to see me. My eyes flipped upwards to see two tremendous, beaming sets of teeth that stretched from ear to ear on each of the two old familiar faces. All of a sudden, I felt a hand on my arm, and my ears were filled with an energetic voice exclaiming my name. With my head down and heart empty, I opened the shop’s doors and stepped inside. The early wake up call was not missed, and neither were Physics and Psychology.Īfter somehow managing to still be breathing after a morning of classes, I make my way over to the downtown Starbucks to start working on the seemingly endless amount of studying, homework, and papers that stood unshakeable in front of me like my own personal Mount Everest. Students drag their feet along the concrete sidewalks, and even the sun shines a little less than normal. No one smiles, and no one asks to make sure you’re okay. I’m sure you’ve gathered what day this is by now. Yep, it’s the first, heartbreaking Monday following a far too short Spring Break, aka the worst, most terribly unfortunate day that has ever existed in any college-goer’s universe. The early morning rays of sun creeping through the blinds are tragically dull. ![]() 3/2/2023 0 Comments Unpacking game review![]() ![]() Likewise, another big issue that does detract from the laidback nature of the game lies with the objects needing to be in specific places – this requirement can be a little fussy, relying sometimes on guesswork than anything obvious – though it is always logical once you know. The other issue I found is that it can sometimes be a little difficult to work out what an object is, though the pixel art style is very good and mostly great at depicting what things are, the simplicity and lack of detail can be a problem on occasion. ![]() Though this is all very straightforward, even very relaxing and Zen at times, the later levels in particular – with their larger number of specific rooms and increasingly bigger numbers of boxes – can get a bit overwhelming. Objects are removed from boxes one at a time and can be rotated to be put in place – on the floor, in shelves, in cupboards, on walls or even just on your bed. Even seeing a favourite toy survive multiple home moves over the years is quite a poignant thing to observe. It’s a very clever way of delivering story through the gentle gameplay of the experience itself, witnessing someone grow and enter into relationships without ever actually seeing those things explicitly happen. ![]() You build up a picture of the protagonist in your mind as the narrative is shaped by the objects and your surroundings. What’s special about Unpacking is the unspoken narrative, brought forth by the objects that you’re unpacking as well as the homes you’re placing them in. Unpacking is one of those games on paper it’s an odd game: each level sees you literally unpacking boxes as the unseen protagonist moves home, finding the right places for each of the objects within – before moving on to the next level, set a few years on, in which you’ll unpack more boxes in a different home, usually with more objects and more rooms to find the right spots for them in.
